Our next myth is one again that seems to be perpetuated by perception and not reality. I’m not sure if this myth was started because of any particular person or rescue, but it seems to keep going despite many campaigns on Facebook and other social medias to try and debunk it. The perception is that the strays are turned into shelters, rescues pull from the shelters and get the animals for free or next to nothing. Then they turn around and adopt them out for hundreds of dollars in adoption fees. Fact: Rescue animals cost hundreds if not thousands by […] Read more »
June 28 – Happy Heart Hugs Day As we near the end of June, it’s time to celebrate Happy Heart Hugs Day in honor of Archie Brindleton. Who was Archie Brindleton you ask? Well he was a super happy and cute French bulldog that inspired this day in the first place. The idea behind this wonderful day is to send love to those that you cannot physically hug or just haven’t seen in a while. In the animal rescue world we know how prevalent this can be with many people having worked together saving animals for years, but never had […] Read more »
It’s officially summer! Although we’re coming to the end of June, there’s still time to celebrate Great Outdoors month by getting outside with your favorite pets or better yet, volunteering at a local animal shelter as a dog walker to give the shelter dogs some much needed time out in the sunshine. This celebration of the outdoors started out as a week (Great Outdoors week) and then in 2004 they decided to expand it to a whole month (not sure if congress was involved but guessing not if they got it done that fast!) We know you enjoy walking your […] Read more »
It’s finally here! We know you’ve been waiting for 364 days, 23 hours, and 59 minutes for June 22 to come around so you’d have a reason and an excuse to bring your dog with you to the office. Chris Roy Read more »
One of the long-standing myths in animal rescue today, and one that is still perpetuated in the general public has to do with nomenclature. Everywhere you go you’ll see the term local Humane Societies or Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and many people do not give the term a second thought as they choose a reputable animal rescue organization to work with. But the truth is that there is no magic or governance around the terms humane society or SPCA. Any organization can refer to themselves as a humane society since the term is not trademarked […] Read more »
For many citizens of the United States, no single animal exudes a greater sense of pride and patriotism than the American Bald Eagle. The image of the eagle adorns our currency and other government seals and is symbolic of the United States. For many years the Bald Eagle numbers were dwindling due to poachers until it was added to the endangered species list from which their numbers have rebounded and continue to thrive. The first American Eagle Day was proclaimed in 1995 by then President Bill Clinton. In 2007 onwards, the United States Senate passed a resolution to mark June […] Read more »
Splurge Day is today – June 18th! I know I don’t need a reason to splurge each year but that’s exactly what national splurge day is all about. Not holding back and treating yourself to something you normally wouldn’t. So we’d like to suggest you apply national splurge day to the animals as well. Visit your local pet bakery and splurge on some fresh, homemade treats for your furry companions. Then, take it a step further and order a doggie safe cake to send to your local animal shelter so that shelter animals can benefit from your splurge as well. […] Read more »
We’ve heard it, and probably said it at some time before, “Rescue people are crazy.” They spend thousands of hours trying to pull animals, raise funds, transport and do home visits. Pictures are posted by the thousands (some of which are horrific) in an effort to raise awareness to the plight of these defenseless creatures. They drain their bank accounts, and retirement savings in an effort to save one more animal. Often when you talk to them they are overwhelmed, emotional, at the end of their rope and frustrated so they can come across as well…crazy. Fact: Animal rescuers are […] Read more »
June 8 – National Best Friend Day Today is National Best Friend Day and we’re hoping that everyone out there has had a best friend at one point or another in their life. Best friends truly make the world a better place to live in and what a great way to celebrate them through this day. Best friends can come in many forms and here at the ARPA we celebrate those that come with four legs, fur, paws and lots of purrs and growls. We know your companion pets are often the only ones that stay with you in the most difficult […] Read more »
Another long-standing myth is that animal rescue organizations have facilities similar to the animal shelter organizations for housing their animals until they are adopted. This is another one of those that depends on the organization. But many forever home adopters are often surprised when they are working with a rescue organization to find out that there is not a central facility where they can go to view the animals or see the rescue in action. Fact: The majority of animal rescue organizations rely on several foster homes for animal housing. As you might expect, operating a facility can be quite […] Read more »
