No, it’s not a play on words, and we’re not trying to invent the next palindrome. We did just use the words animal and rescue back to back in the same sentence. But trust us, we had good reason. Myth: Animal Rescues only rescue animals from animal shelters This one is a tricky one so we’ve added the delimiter of only to help tell the true story here. Part of the stickiness of this myth is how many animal rescue organizations came into existence, pulling animals from animal shelters that were overpopulated. In the U.S., as recent as the 70s […] Read more »
In the United States, the federal government is the single largest employer so it’s no wonder that people often assume the federal government plays a part in regulating animal rescue. After all, aren’t most animal rescue’s 501(c)(3) IRS charities which means the government regularly checks up on them. Fact: Animal welfare organizations are NOT regulated by the United States federal government. Animal welfare is a tricky subject to untangle so we’ll do our best to clear up the misconceptions here. The USDA (Department of Agriculture) does play a role in certain aspects of animal welfare. There are federal laws on […] Read more »
Depending on your involvement in the animal rescue world, you may not be aware of the logistics and methods behind animal rescue transport. After all, we don’t think about how Amazon gets our prime packages to us every day do we? They just show up so why wouldn’t it be the same for animals being rescued? One of the myths often muttered by people unfamiliar with how animal rescue transport works is that the automobile is the only method of transportation involved. They usually say something like “It’s not like you’re rescuing animals on Southwest Airlines.” So the next time […] Read more »
The hot topic in the rescue world today is animal rescue transport. With the declining numbers of overpopulated shelters across the northern United States, there’s more of a demand for the supply of extra animals in many of the southern United States and thus the migration north has increasingly become a regular occurrence. Like you, we’ve heard that rescue relay transport is not an effective way to move animals from one location to another given the volume of animals that can be transported at any given time due to the size of the vehicles being used. But we’re here to […] Read more »
If you’ve been in or around animal rescue for any period of time you’ve heard of rescue relay transport. Heck our good friends at Doobert.com built a whole custom software platform around helping to make this process efficient. But if you ask many local animal shelter workers, you’ll still hear that rescue relay transport is not an effective or safe means to get animals to where they need to go. They claim that there are not enough volunteers and that moving 1-2 dogs at a time does not help solve the issue. Let’s evaluate this premise and see if it […] Read more »
Like us you’ve probably heard the saying “Adopt. Don’t shop.” and “Rescue is my favorite breed.” When you were ready to adopt your most recent pet you might even have been encouraged by friends and family to look for a local animal rescue instead of going to the pet store. Obviously we support the notion that your first choice should be animal rescues and animal shelters but we also want to dispel one of those pesky myths that has been out there for a while that Animal Rescues are breed specific. It’s not hard to imagine the origin of this […] Read more »
It is surprising to think that in 2018 many people still believe that the only place to find a purebred dog is by locating a breeder and buying the animal from them. Surprisingly the statistics show that upwards of 25% of dogs in animal shelters across the country are purebreds so saying that you have to go to a breeder to find a purebred animal is definitely a myth. Unfortunately, people surrender their animals for many different reasons both real and made-up. There are often lines on the weekends in some cities where people are waiting for an animal shelter […] Read more »
With so many types of animal welfare organizations out there, it’s easy to get a rescue, shelter and animal control organization confused. The majority of these organizations are operated as charities (501c3 organizations) but there are a fair number of them that receive municipal funding as well. So this fact is partially true and partially false. Let us explain. The term animal shelter is a generic term usually used to refer to an animal rescue organization that has a physical facility where you can go and adopt an animal. Some organizations even use the moniker animal shelter in their title. […] Read more »
Our next myth is one again that seems to be perpetuated by perception and not reality. I’m not sure if this myth was started because of any particular person or rescue, but it seems to keep going despite many campaigns on Facebook and other social medias to try and debunk it. The perception is that the strays are turned into shelters, rescues pull from the shelters and get the animals for free or next to nothing. Then they turn around and adopt them out for hundreds of dollars in adoption fees. Fact: Rescue animals cost hundreds if not thousands by […] Read more »
One of the long-standing myths in animal rescue today, and one that is still perpetuated in the general public has to do with nomenclature. Everywhere you go you’ll see the term local Humane Societies or Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and many people do not give the term a second thought as they choose a reputable animal rescue organization to work with. But the truth is that there is no magic or governance around the terms humane society or SPCA. Any organization can refer to themselves as a humane society since the term is not trademarked […] Read more »
