National Best Friends Day

What qualities do you think of when you hear the words, “best friend”?  Does someone who is loyal, compassionate, non-judgemental, accepting, and loving come to your mind?  June 8th celebrates that special person in your life that has all of these amazing qualities.  However, a best friend does not necessarily have to be human, and oftentimes our best friends have four paws and fur.

7 Reasons Why Animals Make Great Best FriendsNational Best Friends Day

  1. They are loyal- Once you choose an animal to join your family, he or she will be your friend for life. No matter what you are going through, your pet will be there by your side.  They aim to please and want nothing more than to make you happy.
  2. They are compassionate- It seems that animals may have deep feelings and emotions just like humans.  Animals want to please their owners and they can somehow tell when we are feeling sad or unhappy.
  3. They don’t judge- Animals don’t even know what judgment is!  They will never treat you any differently for a decision that you make, what you look like, or what you like to do.
  4. They accept us- Animals accept us for who we are, point-blank, period.
  5. They are loving- Animals provide us with unconditional love, and they show it with puppy kisses, cuddles, and purring.
  6. They keep us company- Dogs and cats wait patiently for us to come home every day, and they are always ready to play or snuggle up in bed.  If you are feeling bored or lonely, you can count on your pet to be there ready and waiting!
  7. They are all unique- Each animals has his or her own unique personality and you can find one that meshes seamlessly with yours!

Bubbles and Bella

We know that humans and animals form amazing bonds, but how about two different animal species forming an unlikely friendship?  Well in this case, a dog and an elephant did just that!

Bubbles is an African Elephant and Bella is a black Labrador, both of which live at the Myrtle Beach Safari in South Carolina.  Bubbles is 34 years old and weigh about 9,000 pounds.  She was rescued in the early 1980s when her heard was being killed for their ivory, and she is one of the lucky few that survived.  “In 2007, a contractor hired to build Bubbles a swimming pool, abandoned Bella as a puppy at The Preserve. The pool and eventually the river presented these two the opportunity to interact in a way that developed a deep and lasting friendship.”  Watch this video about their friendship and the heartwarming bond that the two have together.
